Biathlon Quebec Cup #2 Report
Sprint 6KM ( 3 x 2Km- 2 x shooting)
On Sunday January 22, 2012, the Biathlon Quebec Cup #2 was held at the Chelsea Nordiq biathlon site in Chelsea, Quebec. The Viking Biathlon club had two members taking part in the event. We had Jerome Daoust and Awhonrakrane Stacey competing against each other. This was Jerome’s first experience competing at this level. As for Awhonwarkrane ,this was his second time around. Needless to say both were a little nervous prior to the start.
At 9 am both were on the shooting range to zero the rifles. After some fine tuning on the sights, they were both ready to face the competition. Jerome had the earlier start time. Elisa and I had given them their last minute instructions regarding the ski course as well as what to expect on the range.
Jerome was first in on the range, and had a good shoot missing only 2 targets, which had him do 2 penalty loops before going back out on the course. He was done shooting in one minute thirty five seconds which is very good. As for Ahwonwarkerae, he had some snow blocking his rear sight which delayed his shooting by three minutes. Once this was corrected, he cleaned the target(shot all five targets) no penalty loops for him!
On their second shoot, Jerome shot two targets out of five; we were really pleased with this. Three loops for him. Awhonwakerane’s second time at the range was great also; he only missed one target giving him one loop on the penalty track.
Jerome finished his course with the biggest smile possible. He was a proud of his accomplishment, finishing a little over 10 minutes behind the leader. Awhonwakerane fell two times on the final ski portion causing him to finish 22 minutes behind the leader.
Keep in mind that these two hardy Vikings were competing against the best from Quebec and Ontario.
Bravo to both of our Vikings for stepping up to the challenge and showing the Biathlon crowd what Vikings are made of. Well done guys!!
